Important Precautions To Take When Dealing With A Leaky Water Heater

by Billie Carlson

Over the years, a residential water heater will be exposed to some complications. Some are minor and others are severe. A leaking water heater qualifies as a severe issue and one that you'll want to use these precautions when addressing.

Use the Dedicated Shutoff Valve

When manufacturers make water heater tanks, they fortunately include emergency shutoff valves on them in case the tank does leak at some point down the road. The moment water is spotted coming from this home appliance, switch this shutoff valve to off.

That should keep the leaking to a minimum, and then you can address the structural issue causing the leak in the first place. If the valve is damaged, you can still switch the main water supply to your home off. Just make sure you act fast before a lot of water gets in and around your home.

Deal With Water Quickly

Once you deal with the water going into the water heater tank, the next point of emphasis is dealing with the water that has already leaked in your home. If it's not that much, some simple supplies like a mop and some towels can do the trick.

If a lot of water has built up around the water heater, then you need to pump it out. There are plenty of water pumps you can set up that can direct this water away from your home. After you've addressed most of the water, begin drying areas with an industrial fan.

Contact a Repair Professional

Some leaks are easy to address on a water heater. A couple of components may have become loose and just need to be tightened, for example. If the leak is severe or you just don't know what to do about it, then it's necessary to hire a professional.

They can check components that have a tendency of leaking, including the inlet and outlet valves, the pressure relief valve, and the drain valve. If any of these components do have issues, the contractor can patch up the structural issue or just replace the component completely.

Water heaters are so important for getting hot and warm water inside, but they won't work perfectly forever. Any time you're left dealing with leaks in particular, make sure you're quick to respond and go through the appropriate care protocol. If you do this by the book, then you can minimize property damage and issues with the water heater itself. Contact a professional who offers water heater repair services to learn more.
