How To Handle Hot Air From An AC

by Billie Carlson

Have you noticed that warm air is coming out from your home's ductwork even though you do not have the thermostat set to heat? If so, this is an indication that you have a problem with the air conditioner. These are a few tips for fixing the system so that you get cold air once again.

Check the Power

Hopefully, the issue with the air conditioner is one that can be fixed by yourself. Start by looking at the power switch outside that controls the compressor. It's possible that this switch got flipped, and it is not turning on when the blower motor does. Flipping the switch back on should easily fix this problem.

If the switch is turned on, yet the compressor is still not running, it may be due to an electrical issue. Check the circuit breaker on the panel inside your home to see if it is tripped. If the circuit is fine, you may have a wiring issue where the wires have shorted out, are disconnected, or are damaged.

Check the Air Filter

Can you remember the last time you put in a new air filter? If it has been years, this could be the problem causing the warm air. An air filter that is completely covered in dirt will stop air from passing through the filter. This will result in warm air since you are not getting the full force of the cold air being produced.

Check the Condenser Coil

One part of the air handler that could have a problem is the condenser coil. There may be an issue where the part is freezing due to debris that has built up on the coil. If the coil is frozen, the refrigerant won't be able to work its magic to absorb the heat from the air. Let the part defrost, then clean the condenser coil to ensure that is can work properly.

Check the Refrigerant Line

If the condenser coil is not working after being cleaned, it may not be working due to a lack of refrigerant in the system. Have an HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) contractor come out to your home to inspect the refrigerant lines. They will repair leaks that they find as well as recharge the system with more refrigerant.

Thankfully, warm air is a problem that is easy to fix. Reach to an air conditioning repair service for assistance at the first sign of trouble to ensure your air conditioner will work once again.
